McCray Elementary Multi-Purpose Wing

Charles W. McCrary Elementary School, located in Asheboro, North Carolina, can be described as the disciplined assembly of a humble palette of materials and illumination of spaces by natural light.  The palette, composed of exposed concrete frame, brick, concrete block, aluminum, glass, and insulated roof deck, includes no extras.  The existing building’s assembly and expression of these materials is plain to sight. The new addition and renovations provided the opportunity refine the school, continuing its original character.

The project consisted of a multipurpose wing (10,000 square feet), including a multipurpose room, music/dance/stage, art room, and support space.  In conjunction with the new construction, a secondary drive way was designed to allow for parent and drop off, which doubles as the bus loading zone. The existing auditorium was renovated to provide a computer lab, several resource rooms, and teacher facilities.  The final piece of the project is the renovation of the administrative suite providing a stronger public/private relationship.
