Completed in 2019, the 99,631-square-foot Onslow County Courthouse expansion was designed to accommodate the needs of a growing population. This project encompassed programming, architecture, interior design, and construction administration, ensuring a seamless integration of modern functionality with the courthouse’s traditional context.
The expansion, which had been in planning for years, required a collaborative approach to address key challenges, including new floodplain regulations, existing building conditions, and connectivity with the original facility. Careful phasing allowed renovations and additions to be completed without disrupting daily courthouse operations.
The three-story addition spans approximately 60,677 square feet, featuring a mechanical penthouse within its gable roof. An additional 38,954 square feet of renovations modernized the existing facility. The courthouse now offers an expansive open lobby, ample queuing space, a new traffic court, clerk/cashier areas, an upgraded district attorney’s office, multiple waiting areas, four new courtrooms, judges’ chambers, offices, attorney lounges, a custody mediation office, conference rooms, and state-of-the-art security systems.
This expansion and renovation ensure the courthouse remains a functional and efficient civic hub, meeting the evolving needs of Onslow County for years to come.
John Knox, formerly John Knox Smith, a founding principal of Smith Sinnett Architecture, peacefully passed away last week on Thursday, August 24. We are all deeply saddened by this loss of our mentor and friend.

Busy day in Onslow yesterday!
A “Topping-Out Ceremony” was led yesterday by County Manager, David Cotton. He reminded us of the traditions behind the topping out ceremony and the importance of this milestone on such an important project for the County. County Commissioners, Courthouse Staff, Design and Construction Team members all signed the final beam before it was raised into place.
We are very proud to accept an AIA Triangle Honor Award for the Morrow Mountain State Park Boathouse!
Located on Lake Tillery, this facility serves as the rowboat and canoe launch for the park. The design of the facility drew upon the rich history of the park, as well as its scenic opportunity. Existing stonework was reused and juxtaposed with new glulam structure to create a transition point on the lake. The rental shop, launch zone, and boat storage areas are all nestled in a large open area under a standing seam metal roof.

Earlier this week, in beautiful Wrightsville Beach, was the state conference for the NC Chapter of the Association for Learning Environments. The keynote address was given by Manuel Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers. Rhonda is this year’s Chapter President & Ed gave a talk on Dixon Middle School.

The Jacksonville-Onlsow Economic Development [JOED] held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for the Burton Park Industrial Building.
We’ve partnered with Pro Construction in a design/build effort to deliver this project. See the rendering and description below:
This 30,000 square foot, pre-engineered metal building, is located in a new industrial park and is designed to attract a large manufacturing tenant. The glass storefront, entry canopy, concrete block base, and alternating panel colors, provide scale and detail to an otherwise traditional and utilitarian shell. A strategy of readily available building materials, as well as minimal site and interior work, balances maximum occupant-flexibility with an accelerated schedule and low construction costs.
