Renovation and Expansion to Modernize the North Wilkesboro Readiness Center

Smith Sinnett Architecture is partnering with the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) to design the addition and renovation of the North Wilkesboro Readiness Center. This project modernizes the facility and ensures compliance with current NCNG standards.

The project will renovate all major components of the building including the classrooms, offices, storage, kitchen, fitness space, and restrooms. The roof, flooring, windows, doors, ceilings, and finishes will be replaced throughout, along with the removal of all hazardous materials. A new 1,000–1,200 SF addition will create much-needed extra space.

Meanwhile, site work will enhance both functionality and security. The project expands parking for military and civilian vehicles, improves site drainage, and upgrades driveway access. Furthermore, the design includes new ornamental fencing at the front, chain-link fencing elsewhere, and protective cable barriers. A flagpole, main entrance sign, and masonry enclosure for utilities will also be added. In addition, the team will address erosion through stream remediation.

On the systems side, the facility will receive significant upgrades. These include a new HVAC system, a kitchen hood with fire suppression, and updated plumbing for reconfigured restrooms and locker rooms. Moreover, electrical improvements will add LED lighting, a fire alarm system, exterior lighting, and new data infrastructure. The existing electrical service will be modified to support an automatic transfer switch and onsite generator.

Overall, the project will deliver a safer, more efficient, and mission-ready facility—built to support the evolving needs of the North Carolina National Guard.
