Transforming a Former High School into a Statewide Safety Training Resource

Smith Sinnett Architecture is transforming a decommissioned high school campus into the 75,050-square-foot Safer Schools Training Academy for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. The facility will provide a realistic, adaptable environment where first responders, school personnel, elected officials, and other agencies can strengthen their preparation for active threats and school-related emergencies.

A key component of the project is the renovation of the campus’s abandoned 600-seat high school auditorium for use as a law enforcement training facility. Repurposing this existing space expands the Academy’s training capabilities while giving new purpose to a significant part of the former school.

Designed as a statewide hub for research, planning, and hands-on training, the Academy will allow participants to evaluate response strategies, building configurations, and emergency procedures within an authentic educational setting. By bringing multiple agencies and stakeholders together, the facility will support greater coordination and advance a shared commitment to safer schools throughout North Carolina.

Smith Sinnett’s services include master planning, architecture, interior design, and construction administration.
