Master Plan and Secondary School Design for the American Cooperative School of Tunis
The American Cooperative School of Tunis (ACST) is a K–12 International Baccalaureate school that serves a diverse, global community. With students and educators from around the world, ACST blends cultural awareness with a rigorous, project-based curriculum.
Given this dynamic learning model, the campus needed a flexible and future-ready master plan. From the outset, Smith Sinnett engaged the community through multiple meetings with school leaders, faculty, and families to identify priorities for replacing the middle and high school facilities.
To expand learning opportunities, the new program includes study rooms, STEAM labs, common work areas, and a new aquatic center. Additionally, the design maximizes outdoor spaces for both recreation and education.
The proposed layout features two academic wings, which are connected by a central learning commons. This shared hub not only encourages collaboration but also provides outdoor learning opportunities on the ground, second, and third levels.
Visually, the new secondary school draws inspiration from the existing elementary building. At the same time, it establishes a distinct identity suited to older students.
Smith Sinnett developed a detailed phasing plan to ensure the campus remained fully operational during construction. This plan allowed construction to progress while minimizing disruption and maintaining a secure environment.
Ultimately, the design supports American Cooperative School of Tunis’ mission, values, and international community. It delivers a vibrant, adaptable learning environment that will serve students well into the future.
