Modernizing a Legacy: Reidsville Readiness Center Renovation and Expansion

The Reidsville Readiness Center project for the North Carolina National Guard adds a 700 SF entry lobby and a 1,400 SF classroom to the existing 23,000 SF National Guard Armory. Originally designed in 1979 by North Carolina modernist architect Brian Shawcroft, the building features a striking roofline, distinct window patterning, and detailed masonry. Smith Sinnett’s design honors these original elements while introducing modern upgrades to the building.

The renovation consisted of improvements to nearly every part of the facility. The team replaced the doors, windows and the roof insulation and membrane. They also upgraded the electrical and HVAC systems and refreshed all interior finishes. To improve layout and function, the former indoor firing range was transformed into offices. Additionally, the storage, kitchen, restrooms, and locker rooms were redesigned.

The site improvements support both day-to-day use and long-term durability. The team added new parking and improved grading for military vehicles. New fencing and gates now provide better security. They also designed a Memorial Plaza with masonry pavers, seat walls, and site lighting. Smith Sinnett ensured the display includes reassembled statues, monument pedestals, and the original flagpole.

Altogether, this project modernizes a historic facility while preserving its architectural legacy and military purpose.
